Rain Means Mosquitos... Is Your Pet Protected?

With all the rain we've had lately, standing water has been collecting in yards, ditches, planters—even puddles at the park. And with standing water comes one of summer’s sneakiest dangers: mosquitos.
While they may be a nuisance to us, mosquitos pose a serious health threat to pets, especially cats and dogs. Mosquitos carry heartworm, a potentially fatal parasite that affects the heart and lungs. Just one mosquito bite can transmit the larvae, which grow inside the animal’s body and cause severe illness over time.
Heartworm prevention is crucial, especially this time of year. Here’s what you can do:
💉 Talk to your vet about monthly preventatives for both cats and dogs—even indoor pets can be bitten.
💧 Dump standing water around your home regularly (including birdbaths, buckets, toys, or plant saucers).
🐶 Use pet-safe repellents outdoors—never use human bug sprays on animals.
🏡 Keep pets inside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitos are most active.
Heartworm is preventable, but not easily treatable—especially in cats. Prevention is far safer, cheaper, and less stressful for everyone involved.
Let’s make sure our furry family members are protected so they can enjoy a safe and happy summer!
