Fireworks & Fur Babies: Keeping Pets Safe

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day with cookouts and fireworks, it’s important to remember that what’s fun for us can be absolutely terrifying for our pets. Loud booms, flashing lights, and the unfamiliar chaos of holiday celebrations can trigger intense anxiety—and even cause animals to bolt in fear.
Here’s how to keep your pets safe and calm during fireworks season:
🐾 Create a Safe Space
Set up a quiet room or cozy corner indoors where your pet feels secure. Include familiar bedding, toys, water, and a little background noise—like a fan, white noise machine, or TV—to help mask the sounds outside.
🐾 Keep Them Indoors
Even if your pet is normally calm or outdoor-friendly, keep them inside during fireworks. More pets go missing around July 4th than any other time of year due to panic-induced escapes.
🐾 Update ID & Microchips
Make sure your pet’s tags and microchip information are current. In the worst-case scenario, this can make the difference between a lost pet and a joyful reunion.
🐾 Don’t Bring Pets to Fireworks Events
Even the most social animals can become overwhelmed. The safest and kindest place for your furry friend is at home, far away from the noise and crowds.
🐾 Ask Your Vet About Calming Aids
If your pet is especially anxious, talk to your vet now about options. There are natural calming treats, pheromone diffusers, and even medications that can help your pet stay relaxed.
Fireworks may be a tradition for us—but for our pets, they’re often a source of fear and distress. Let’s celebrate responsibly and make sure our companions feel as safe and loved as they deserve.
