Every year, Modern Woodmen of America gives communities across the country the opportunity to recognize individuals who go above and beyond in service. For 2024, their national campaign shines a spotlight on those making a difference in the lives of animals—and we’re beyond proud to celebrate some truly extraordinary people right here in Marion.
This year’s Hometown Hero Award honors five incredible volunteers who have dedicated their hearts, time, and talents to Homeless to Home Animal Rescue:

🐾 Bev & Dawn Sperling – This mother-daughter duo has been with us since 2012. Whether it’s fostering, transporting, volunteering at events, or making cozy hammocks and stunning quilt donations, they’re always ready to help—day or night.

🐾 Charlie & Ginny Jones – Fifteen years ago, Ginny joined us to help with the rescue, and eventually brought along her husband Charlie—a Purple Heart Veteran who’s been a hero to animals ever since. From mowing and hauling supplies to purchasing sheds and building essential infrastructure, the Joneses are pillars of our rescue family.

🐾 Mark Vicars – Since 2018, Mark has worked tirelessly to support the rescue—often for 12 hours a day. He’s trained new staff, handled repairs, improved processes, co-led our biggest annual fundraiser (the Columbus golf outing), and opened his home to many rescue cats (and neighborhood strays!).
These remarkable individuals don’t just volunteer—they transform lives. Thanks to their dedication, love, and selflessness, the rescue is able to do what it does every day.

🙏 We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Amanda Denney, Stephanie Bosh, and Maggie Bosh of Modern Woodmen of America, Marion Chapter, for recognizing these local heroes. Alongside the award, they gifted us with a much-needed donation, cat trees, scratchers, and toys—all of which are already being loved by our furry residents!
💜 From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to Modern Woodmen for honoring the volunteers who mean the world to us—and for showing just how much community can accomplish when we come together.
👏 Please join us in thanking our heroes—and the organization that lifted them up!
